The church serves the local community and provides enriched community life through an established Highland Elementary School campus. The building committee retained Swerhone Architectural to explore design alternatives for a much-needed additional community multi-purpose room, expanded administrative offices, and Sabbath school classroom spaces. Living Hope Church, Vancouver, WA, is a non-denominational Christian fellowship founded in 2005. This 86,000 SF church currently operates out of an originally designed “big-box” retail building. Derrick assisted the church in obtaining an occupancy permit, turning this existing “M” occupancy into an acceptable “A-3” with the local fire marshal and building department. We are working closely with the church to develop a “master plan” for this large two-acre space. Yacolt Seventh-day Adventist Church Fellowship Center 8,000 sf Church-New Construction A-3 Occupancy While serving as principal architect with Avalon (1998–2012), Derrick designed this 8,000 SF church fellowship center in rural Clark County, WA. The architectural concept features a dramatic porte cochere at the main entry, creating a welcoming arrival experience. Inside, the building includes a 1,200 SF sanctuary with a spacious vaulted ceiling, large administrative offices, flexible classroom spaces, and a 1,375 SF dining hall with an adjacent warming kitchen—supporting both worship and community functions.

River of Life-Community Church 10,500 SF Church - Complete Remodel A-3 Occupancy - Complete Building Remodel The remodel of an existing restaurant into a small start-up community church in an economically deprived district, located along the I-5 corridor of Hazel Dell, WA. The congregation completely gutted the old Bavarian restaurant into a fellowship hall for worship. Swerhone Architecture worked closely with the city to enable second-story classrooms through new exterior exit stairs.

Memorial Lutheran Church, Vancouver, WA Swerhone Architecture worked closely with the church to establish a phased capital campaign to expand and upgrade their inner-city ministry. Memorial Lutheran is located in an ethnic neighborhood with a diverse set of challenges and community needs. The architect presented options for consideration. The master plan calls for a new 8,000 SF sanctuary, 8,000 SF multipurpose, 10,000 SF administration, education, and 8,000 SF classroom space.
