Columbian Newspaper Building

112 10th Street (now E. Evergreen) Cross Street is Broadway, Vancouver, WA

The restoration of 112 10th Street was made possible by the vision and dedication of its new owners, Doug Walker and Mark Fisher. What began as a building with a largely forgotten history was rediscovered through meticulous research after its 1960s-era façade was removed, unveiling its original 1927 design by renowned Vancouver architect Day Walter Hilborn and engineer Richard V. Gough.

Originally conceived as an early mixed-use structure, the building housed the Columbian Newspaper offices in its boxy Federal-style eastern section, while the western portion served as retail space, including the Storm King Ice Cream Parlor. Historical records trace ownership of the property back to Fred W. Bier, who held lots 7 and 8 as early as 1916. In 1928, Bier and his partner Peter Johnson sold the lots to Herbert Campbell, who had purchased the Columbian Newspaper in 1921 and subsequently constructed the building.

Now proudly listed on the Clark County Historical Registry, this remarkable renovation preserves an important piece of Vancouver’s past, celebrating its architectural and cultural significance for generations to come.
