Columbia River Floating Home
The Columbia River Floating Home project is a collaboration between a private donor and a nonprofit organization, made possible by the generous gift of a moorage slip and an aging houseboat on a 40′ x 60′ float along the Columbia River. Upon assessment, the original structure was found to be beyond repair, leading to a complete demolition and a fresh architectural vision.
The new residence was designed to meet the requirements of the moorage HOA, CC&Rs, and City of Gresham development codes. The entry sequence is both functional and inviting—an exterior covered entry leads to a double-height foyer and central stairway. From there, the home opens to sweeping river views and an expansive main-level deck.
Drawing on extensive experience with compact urban housing, Swerhone Architecture created a design that is both efficient and generous. The great room—with exposed timber beams, 9-foot ceilings, and a 12-foot-wide commercial overhead door—connects seamlessly to the outdoor deck and river beyond. The interior layout blends entertainment areas with private retreats, including a spacious master suite with its own deck.
The 3-bedroom residence is designed with sustainability in mind. The team is working closely with consultants to explore energy-efficient systems and renewable strategies tailored to the unique floating home environment.
